Works as well as it looks – I bought this freezer and one from a competitor. Both did a decent job of freezing the ice cream. The features that I like about this one are 1) longer cord because my plug is not close to the sink, 2) a see-through lid so I can watch the freezing progress , and 3)there’s a small cap to use after the ice cream is frozen.

First Use – Made a simple vanilla batch today. While reading the recipe I noticed the ingredients would no way test the capacity of the mixing cylinder. So I doubled it and proceeded. Maybe filled it half way. But I wanted to get an ice cream maker that would make enough to last a while. Dessert for breakfast and lunch deserve a try right? Easy to clean up. The electric motor fit well and sounded strong enough. I didn’t run it until it stopped on its own. I guessed a little earlier than the instructions suggested and employed the old hand crank. The hand crank goes on the opposite way than I first tried. I thought there was going to be a problem. I must have overlooked that part of the instruction. Maybe explaining it would be confusing. Suffice it to say when you attempt to place the hand on the wooden tub, it only goes on one way. The tub was easy to clean. I rinsed it quite thoroughly. I did fill it with water two hours before my ice cream making process per the instructions so the water would get the wooden tub’s material to expand. It still leaked a bit at the base inside the space that is out of site. But it was maybe a half cup of salted water. I expect this leaking issue will decrease or go away all together after a few more uses. Little assembly necessary. Just a Phillips screw drive for the screw in the hand crank handle. I tightened the screws for the hardware that holds the hand crank/electric crank since the screw driver was at the ready. After this first use I can say so far so good. I am happy with the complete product.

This freezer works! – Homemade ice cream is expensive to make so it’s imperative that the freezer works properly. I had a White Mountain freezer for years and tried to replace it. Our first attempt was with a 6qt. freezer that did not churn the ice cream fast enough to develop the volume that I wanted. We replaced it with this freezer, and I am impressed. After spending $17.00 for the ingredients to make 1/2 gal. of ice cream, the last thing I wanted was another bad result.

Possibly the best one but not flawless – I’ve been making homemade ice cream for a few decades. It’s a family favorite to cut up fresh fruit, usually strawberries or Peaches, and put them on top of our family recipe vanilla ice cream. This one works better than most I have used. The motor is fairly quiet and it works at what it does until it shuts off, then you know it’s ready. BUT (there’s always a but!) I have only used it for a few months and it is already leaking from the bottom. Don’t be fooled by those straps; they are merely a decoration. The wood is glued together and sealed with what looks like a silicon sealer. The other failure point is that the brackets that clamp down the motor are aluminum and are screwed to the wood with machine screws with nuts on the inside of the bucket. The nuts are not self-locking, and they apparently don’t use any lock-tite product to secure them so they eventually will come loose like mine did. So if you buy this one be sure to remove the screws and apply some lock-tite or self-locking screws yourself and you’ll be all set. One star removed for these fail points!

Need instructions – It works fine. I wish it had come with directions to assemble. I still do not know how to use the electric option. I also was hoping for some recipes.
